Snow Removal in Shuniah

Forty kilometres of Superior shoreline east of the city, where camps became year-round homes and every lane is longer than it looks.

Shuniah is what happens when a cottage country grows up. The oldest municipality in the district, incorporated in 1873 on the silver rush that named it, is now forty kilometres of Lake Superior shoreline where the camps are winterized homes and the driveways need plowing all winter. Thunder Bay Snow Removal runs a lakeshore route through it.

From Silver to Shoreline

The name is Ojibwe, from zhooniyaa, meaning silver, and the municipality was born in the 1860s mining moment that also produced Silver Islet, briefly the richest silver mine on earth, just off the peninsula’s tip. The mines flooded and closed within a generation. The shoreline stayed, and it turned out to be the more durable asset.

Today about 3,200 people live here year-round, nearly doubling toward five thousand each summer as the seasonal places fill. The year-round number is the one that matters to us, and it is growing fast, up sixteen percent in the last census window as more camps convert to full-time homes.

Camp Properties, Winter Standards

A property designed as a summer retreat meets winter with a specific set of problems. The lane in is long, narrow, and treed. The parking area was sized for a couple of cars on a July weekend. Nothing about the layout considered where months of plowed snow should stack, and the nearest help is a highway drive away.

Our Shuniah stops run on the rural and acreage plowing model: the lane walked and marked before freeze-up, banks planned where the melt can drain away from the buildings, and equipment sized for distance. A seasonal contract is the default at this range, since winter here is not an event but a standing condition, from Amethyst Harbour’s shore roads to Pass Lake under the Sleeping Giant.

The Corridor and the Commute

Most working Shuniah households point west down Highway 11/17 toward Thunder Bay every morning, on a stretch of Trans-Canada currently being widened to four lanes through McTavish. A commute like that starts with getting off your own property, and that is the entire job description: lane open, approach sanded, before the highway run begins. On the glaze mornings between storms, sanding and ice control covers the lakeshore’s frozen approaches, and driveway snow clearing handles the in-town-sized properties clustered near the corridor.

Winter Service Questions in Shuniah

How far into Shuniah do your routes go?

The municipality stretches a long way, with eleven scattered communities from Amethyst Harbour to Pass Lake across more than five hundred and seventy square kilometres. Our route works the populated lakeshore roads and the Highway 11/17 corridor. If you are further out, ask, and you will get a straight yes or no rather than a booking that never shows.

Our place used to be a summer camp. Is winter service even set up for that?

That story is half of Shuniah. The municipality grew sixteen percent between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, and much of that is camps and cottages converted to year-round living. Those properties were laid out for July, not January, with long treed lanes and no thought given to where plowed snow goes. We quote them as what they now are, which is winter homes.

Who plows the roads out here?

Shuniah's own public works crews sand, salt, and clear the municipal roads, and the province's contractors keep the Trans-Canada moving. Your lane, from the road allowance to the door of what used to be the camp, belongs to you, and that is the part we take over.

Does being on the lake change the winter?

Living against Superior means real wind and the storms that ride in along the shore. Practically, lakeshore lanes drift, exposed approaches glaze, and a second pass after a blow is a planned part of service here rather than an apology.
