Snow Plowing in Thunder Bay

Truck-and-blade work for driveways, laneways, and lots where speed and a clean scrape matter.

The plow truck is the workhorse of a Thunder Bay winter, and for good reason: nothing moves more snow faster on a driveway, a laneway, or a small lot. Thunder Bay Snow Removal runs blade work across the city as one of the two core methods on our routes.

What a Blade Does Well

Distance and volume. A long straight driveway, a shared lane out toward the rural edge, a small commercial lot with honest storage space along its sides. On these, a plow clears in minutes what hand methods spend an hour on, and the economics of your quote reflect that speed.

A good pass is more than pushing, though. The scrape matters. Snow left as a smoothed two-centimetre lid becomes hardpack by the weekend and ice by the cold snap, and then the surface is a project instead of a maintenance stop. Our passes cut to the actual surface, and where hardpack has already formed from foot and tire traffic, the blade works it off in layers rather than polishing it.

Banks Are a Decision, Not a Byproduct

Every push ends somewhere, and by mid-winter the somewheres are full. Thunder Bay’s own guidance to residents says to pile toward the direction traffic comes from, so backing out does not mean backing blind. Plow work at route scale runs on the same logic: banks placed where they can grow all season without blinding an exit, burying a hydrant, or swallowing the visitor parking.

When a property’s storage genuinely runs out, pushing harder is not the answer. Cutting the banks back and trucking them away is, and that is snow hauling.

Where the Plow Hands Off

Blades have limits. Steps, walks, and door aprons belong to the hand crews under sidewalk and walkway shovelling. Tight lots with nowhere to push often clear better under snow blowing, which throws snow over the banks instead of adding to them. And the packed ridge the municipal plow leaves across driveways is its own stubborn problem with its own page, windrow clearing.

Most route stops use two of these methods in one visit. The point is never the equipment, it is a property you can use, cleared by whichever tool does it best.

Snow Plowing Questions

Plowing versus blowing — which does my property want?

Plowing pushes snow to the sides fast, which suits long open drives and lots with room for banks. Blowing throws it clear of the working area entirely, which wins on tight lots where banks have nowhere to grow. Plenty of properties get both across a season, and the quote visit is where we match the tool to the ground.

What is back-dragging and why does it matter at my garage?

The blade cannot push toward a closed garage door, so the truck pulls snow backward away from the door and apron first, then turns and pushes the pile out with the rest. Without that pass, a plow leaves a knee-high wall exactly where you park.

Will a plow tear up my driveway?

A blade run carelessly can. Ours run with the edge suited to the surface, shoes fitted where gravel or interlock calls for it, and the first visit of the season done with the property walked rather than guessed at under snow.

Can you plow a private lane shared by a few houses?

Yes, shared lanes and private roads are regular plow work, split between the households however you have arranged it. One clean pass beats three neighbours with three snowblowers pretending the middle does not exist.
