Driveway Snow Clearing in Thunder Bay

Just the driveway, done properly, from a short pad in town to a long double drive walled in by its own banks.

Some properties need the full package. Plenty just need the driveway open, every storm, without fail. Thunder Bay Snow Removal runs driveway-only service across the city for exactly that customer.

Every Driveway Is Its Own Job

A short pad in front of a wartime house off Arundel Street is a ten-minute stop. A double-wide with a hundred feet of run and a hedge on both sides is not. Between those two sit most of the driveways in Thunder Bay, and pricing them the same number would mean half the customers subsidizing the other half.

So we quote the actual driveway. Length, width, surface, slope, and, the one people forget, where the snow can physically go. A drive with open lawn on both sides has cheap storage. One walled in by fence and hedge fills its margins by January, and the honest quote accounts for that from the start.

The Ridge at the End

Thunder Bay’s own plowing policy is clear about the windrow, the packed ridge a passing street plow pushes across every driveway mouth on its route. The city states plainly that its crews will not remove it. The homeowner owns that ridge, even the part sitting on city land.

It is also the worst snow on the property. Plow-compacted, often icy, and delivered on the city’s schedule rather than the storm’s, sometimes hours after everything else is clean. Driveway service here includes going back for it, because a cleared driveway with a sealed exit is not cleared. The full story of that ridge, and what we do about it, lives on the windrow clearing page.

Surfaces, and Not Wrecking Them

Concrete, asphalt, gravel, and interlock each want slightly different treatment. Blade height, shoes on or off, and how aggressively the surface gets scraped down all change with what is underneath. Newer concrete in its first winters gets sand rather than salt on the ice, since salt and young concrete are a bad pairing. Interlock gets cleared with more care at the edges where a blade can catch a lifted paver.

None of this is complicated. It just has to actually be done, and done by someone who saw the driveway before the season started rather than meeting it for the first time under thirty centimetres.

When the Banks Win Anyway

On the tightest lots there comes a point in a heavy winter where the storage is simply gone. When pushing stops working, snow hauling trucks the banks off site and resets the property. And when what you actually need is the whole approach handled, walk and steps included, residential snow clearing is the wider plan this service slots into.

Driveway Snow Clearing Questions

Does a gravel driveway need different handling?

Early in the season it does. Until the base freezes hard we carry the cutting edge slightly high so the machine moves snow without redistributing your gravel onto the lawn. Once real cold sets in, a frozen gravel drive clears much like pavement.

Where does the snow go on a narrow city lot?

To whichever side keeps your sightline open when you back out. The city recommends piling toward the direction traffic comes from for exactly that reason. On the older narrow lots in town, we plan the bank placement at the first visit because by February there is no changing it.

Can you clear just one storm without a contract?

Yes. Storm-by-storm service exists for people who handle the ordinary snowfalls themselves and want the heavy ones taken off their hands. Contract routes get priority timing, and we are honest about that trade-off.

Do you shovel the walk too, or strictly the driveway?

This service is deliberately the narrow one, priced for the driveway alone. Most customers add the walk and steps, which turns it into our residential plan, and plenty of route stops are exactly that pairing.
