Snow Blowing Services in Thunder Bay

Snow thrown clear of the working area instead of stacked beside it, for lots where banks have nowhere left to grow.

There are two ways to get snow off a driveway: push it somewhere nearby, or throw it far enough that it stops being your problem. Thunder Bay Snow Removal runs blower equipment for the second answer, and on the right property it is the better one all winter long.

The Bank Problem, Solved by Physics

A plowed driveway stores its own snow at its own edges. In a Thunder Bay winter, where November’s snowfall is still sitting in the yard come April, those edge banks only ever grow. On a generous rural lot, fine. On a fifty-foot city lot in Port Arthur or Westfort, the driveway narrows storm by storm until backing out means threading a canyon blind.

A blower does not store snow. It lifts the fall and throws it in a controlled arc, spreading it thin across the lawn where it lies flat, melts early, and blocks nothing. February looks like December. That is the product.

Where Blowing Wins

Narrow lots with close neighbours, where a plowed bank would land on someone else’s property line. Drives walled by fence or hedge with no storage margin at all. Gravel drives after freeze-up, where a blower set at the right height moves the snow and leaves the stones. Properties whose owners have simply had enough of the spring bank that takes until May long weekend to melt.

And every property in the season’s late innings, when existing banks have eaten the storage a plow needs. Plenty of our snow plowing customers switch methods for the back half of the winter for exactly that reason.

Where It Does Not

Heavy, wet, end-of-season snow moves slowly through any blower, and a deep drift with a plow-packed base wants a blade’s brute force first. Small lots with genuinely nowhere to throw, hard against buildings on all sides, sometimes need the third option instead: snow hauling, where the snow leaves the property entirely.

The route plans around all of this. Method is our decision to get right, not yours to guess.

Part of a Full Plan

Blowing covers the driveway. The walks, steps, and door aprons still belong to the hand crews under sidewalk and walkway shovelling, and the whole household package, method included, is what a residential snow clearing plan wraps into one quote.

Snow Blowing Questions

Why choose blowing over a plow blade?

A blade moves snow sideways and stores it at the edge of the cleared area. A blower lifts and throws it metres away, spreading it thin across the yard. On a narrow lot, the blade's banks eventually squeeze the driveway from both sides. The blower's spread never does, which is the whole argument.

Does blown snow damage lawns or gardens?

Spread thin across a dormant, snow-covered lawn, no. We aim the discharge away from cedar hedges, dryer vents, walks, and anywhere a berm of thrown snow would cause its own problem, and the spring melt runs off faster from a thin layer than from a plowed mountain.

Is blowing slower or more expensive than plowing?

Slower per pass, usually, which on some properties shows in the quote. What it saves arrives later in the winter, when plowed properties are paying to have their overgrown banks cut back and hauled while blown properties still have their full driveway width.

Several companies advertise snow blowing. What should I actually compare?

Compare scope, not equipment. Ask what happens to your walk and steps, who deals with the city windrow, and what the plan is when a wet March storm exceeds what a blower moves comfortably. Method matters less than whether the whole property is actually covered.
