Snow Removal in Westfort

The village inside the city — century-old homes, a main street of hundred-year businesses, and winters that arrive off the mountain.

Westfort does not think of itself as a neighbourhood. It is a village that happens to be inside Thunder Bay, and it has receipts: a main street where the same family businesses have traded for over a century. Thunder Bay Snow Removal keeps its streets, drives, and storefronts open all winter.

The Village That Outlived Its Terminus

Westfort’s story starts with the railway. CPR construction began here in 1875 with Westfort as the eastern terminus, and when the railway consolidated its operations seven kilometres downstream a decade later, the young community could have faded. Instead the electric street railway arrived in 1893, the neighbourhood knit itself around elevator and rail-yard work, and Westfort settled into the independent identity it still carries.

Frederica Street is the proof. Swartz Fine Fashions has served customers since 1906, J.B. Evans has run four generations deep since 1912, Janzen’s Pharmacy passed its centennial after opening in 1916, and Westfort Coney Island has anchored the dining culture since 1950. When the neighbourhood’s businesses built a “Westfort winter wonderland” together in 2020, nobody who knows the place was surprised.

What a Century of Housing Means in January

A community that filled in across the early twentieth century has early-twentieth-century properties. Compact lots, drives sized for cars two sizes smaller than today’s, detached garages off the lane, and walks poured before anyone now living was born. The Mary J. L. Black Library has stood on West Brock Street since 1938, and plenty of the housing around it is older.

Winter service here is close-quarters work. Driveway snow clearing on short approaches, sidewalk and walkway shovelling for the paths a machine cannot enter, and bank placement that respects a small lot’s arithmetic. Where storage is truly gone by February, throwing rather than pushing wins, which is why snow blowing earns its keep on these blocks.

Under the Mountain

Westfort does its winter in sight of Mount McKay, the 489-metre mesa on Fort William First Nation land that fills the southern sky here. Between the mountain and the Kaministiquia, the neighbourhood catches real weather, and the route treats it accordingly: overnight clearing ahead of the commute, the city-plow windrow opened on the return pass, and sand down on the glaze mornings. The full household version is residential snow clearing, and the village’s seniors, of whom Westfort has generations, are the quiet core of our snow removal for seniors routes.

Winter Service Questions in Westfort

Is Westfort a regular route or an occasional stop?

A regular route, and one of our favourites to run. Westfort is a dense, concentrated neighbourhood with generations of families in place, which is exactly the shape of community where a winter route works well — many stops close together, cleared in sequence before the morning.

The houses here are old. What does that mean for clearing?

Westfort filled in around rail and elevator work generations ago, and its houses date from eras when a driveway was an afterthought if it existed at all. Short drives, back-lane parking, narrow side paths, old concrete. We clear them with appropriately sized equipment and hand crews rather than treating every property like a suburban double-wide.

When does the city get to Westfort's residential streets?

In its residential phase, which starts once ten centimetres has accumulated and priority roads are done, and can run up to seventy-two hours after a big storm. The village's stores on Frederica sit on busier corridors that see plows earlier. Either way, our route clears your property on the storm's own night.

Do you service the businesses on Frederica Street too?

Yes. Storefront work — entrance, frontage walk, and small lots — is part of the route here. A street whose businesses have been serving customers since 1906 understands the value of an open door on a snowy morning.
